Birth Photography :: Central Alberta

When a child is born it changes everyone around it. From adult to parent, parent to grandparent, roles change as our hearts grow larger to hold even more love in them.

Birth photography is some of the most meaningful, emotion filled, connection driven images I have ever taken, and there is no question that I love being given the opportunity to create these memories for families. They are not all to be shared, and some may choose to share none and just covet those moments themselves. The firsts, that we forget with all the hormones, and activity going on…I don’t remember if my babies were crying or content for the first probably 16 hours after delivery, but I wish I had a nice photo of myself, gleaming in joy, holding them close. Soothing and calming them as those mama instincts take over, or the moment a tear fell from dads eye as he saw his child for the first time, or held them. These are moments you might not even notice happening, but life is full of those. They are the times that count the most.

These are meant to tell the story of birth without words, to remind of the events leading up to, and after as a family grows by one more.

Rian’s Birth

Rian is the third child, and the third child of this sweet family that I had the honor of attending the birth of! It took him no time to arrive giving me only 20 minutes from arrival of myself to arrival of baby! Is Fast and Furious appropriate? I believe so! He was the stubborn baby, causing false labors, putting his mom under extra stress being breach for quite awhile till deciding to flip permanently. So it was not surprise to anyone that he came even faster than his two sisters when he felt the time was right.

Last fall I met with Dana and James for their engagement session at a stunning old stone built barn south of Wainwright.  It was of course the late evening, but I still remember shooting longer and later than normal (aka it was pretty much dark out) as these two are so fun and cute together!! You can tell just the way they look at each other that nothing will stand in the way of the love they have for one another.

James keeps things lively for Dana with his sense of humor. He proposed in probably the most elaborate way I’ve heard of yet for my couples. It involved a saskquatch suit, some helpful accomplices, a trail cam video and of course a beautiful woman who said yes. I am sure Saturday will involve a lot of laughter and good stories about these two and their times spent together.

As it is just days before these two tie the knot and become Mr and Mrs I wanted to share a few of my favorites from their session. Of course I am late sharing but honestly I love putting these blogs together close to the wedding as it is nice to go back and reminisce on the fun times I spend with my couples. #excusesexcuses #betterlatethannever

I can’t wait for Saturday and I am hoping to get to see James’ proposal video… maybe even share it with y’all (wink wink D + J).

Nash :: At Home Lifestyle Session

This guy, weighing in at a crushing 5 lb 5 oz, was already a pound heavier than he was just over a month prior at birth. Even with an earlier than expected arrival, and a grand entrance to Canada via private jet, Nash is thriving with his doting parents at the root of that.

I absolutely LOVE at home sessions, they seem to flow so much more naturally than any of my studio newborn sessions ever did (kudos to those amazing photographers who rock the studio sessions though!). With everything at the ready there is no need to worry about forgetting anything at home, and we can capture those real moments in your favorite chair snuggled up as you would if you were all alone, just you and babe, which was pretty much how Nashs session started.

I arrived to find Nash sleeping like a log on his daddys chest. His long arm reaching out and wrapping dad. Even with a few turns, and rolls, and re-positions he still slept…and slept.  Much to the amazement (and joy) of his mom and dad. A few tiny newborn wheeze/grunts sprinkled in his sleep were the best sounds to serenade me while I worked.

Nash, while small yet feisty, has huge hands and feet suggesting this guy is going to grow big, and strong. With the cutest round cheeks and his little dimple chin…I suspect the class of 2035 is going to have one handsome graduate! Until that time I can’t wait to watch you grow Nash!

A sunny July morning the party was just about to get ramped up for these two crazy lovers at this Alberta prairie wedding!

After the typical morning getting ready at Luxe Hair Design, they were off to get ready with mimosas (and shots) in hand….wedding mornings can be stressful so a little relaxer is always a good thing! While the girls did their thing I headed over to visit the guys and true to fashion…they were late after a round of golf (seriously how do the groom and groomsmen get off with such easy breezy mornings, while the girls are often in full panic mode, and if not, they are ready to jump in it!).  But only minutes behind and as guys can, they were ready in a flash and it was back to the girls in just as quick. It was not long and we were all ceremony bound….

Melissa and Dallas were married in Wainwright at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and left the church, married, and in true style in Len’s Party Bus….this may just be my new favorite way to get around! Melissa’s sweet as pie niece came along for the ride and she had a blast hanging with the crew, and out the window! We toured around the prairie with a stop at the local pub, and in the midst of the fun took some time to sneak the bride and groom photos in, of course, on the gorgeous patio at the Honeypot Eatery in Wainwright. It was time to part with Len, and arrive at the hall for the bridal parties grande entrance.

Off we went, well they did, as unfortunate luck left keys possibly locked in my vehicle, but tow truck to the rescue and we made it in time. The reception definitely did not allow for the party to die down, and on it went. Dances, speeches, food and POPCORN! Plus a stunning cake by one of Melissas coworkers, covered in succulents and fresh flowers…um YES, and it was delish too!

It was the perfect wedding for these two, so full of fun and laughter…just absolutely THEM!

Congratulations on your first anniversary Melissa and Dallas!

On what felt like the coldest day in January, just a few weeks before the ice castle was gone for another year, we made the trip to Edmonton for a winter grad session. Sydney’s teal blue dress was perfect against the whites and blues of the ice castle. Standing out just enough, but fitting in as if exactly designed for the backdrop. Many thanks to Casa De Flores and Cocoa Tree Bake Shop for the stunning flower crown and adorable cupcake, as well as Makeup by Ashleigh for the amazing make up to bring out Sydneys natural beauty.

Wind blown hair and sun streaked shots, this was an all around breath taking shoot….and literally breathtakingly COLD! The fellow tourists at the ice castle all shared their compliments and sympanthy for Sydney in her sleeveless dress, with just a thin blanket at times to keep her warm. There were comments about the ‘ice princesses’ and ‘Elsa’ overheard by the young children running through the tunnels of ice. But the overwhelming response was with how beautiful Sydney looked. I have the honor of knowing this girl well, and I will tell you that beauty runs as deep as the cold did that day!
